At the end of the year, I try to boil it all down into one word. 2012 was one of new experiences, amazing opportunities, funny memories, priceless friendships, growth in Christ and also one of challenges, tears, clinging to what I know to be true even when I don’t feel it, treading unfamiliar territory and sometimes just scratching my head in bewilderment that I’m the one living the life that I live.
Needless to say, hard to boil down! But I chose a word. I chose GIFT.
I’ve always loved the quote (my paraphrase) “It may be the rougher road, but the view from the top is worth it” … I’m nowhere near “the top”, but I feel like the trees have cleared a little bit on my journey and I have been absolutely WOWED by the view. I can see God working in me and around me and I’m so thankful.
There have been hundreds of little gifts over the year (see below), but those gifts are pointless and empty without Christ. And HE is the gift of last year. He is the wow in an average life, the reason that life can be good regardless of circumstances. (Psalms 90:14) He’s the One that changes earthly perspective into heavenly perspective. He has been my Shelter, my Guide, my Comforter, my Rock (Psalms 18). There is more joy to a life lived in Him than any other sort of life (John 15:11). He is just SO GOOD. If you don’t know Him, you should.
Just for fun, a glimpse of this past year from my iPhone…
I think of so many friends that wouldn’t describe this past year as a gift and this post is not to diminish the valley times of life, where God working is painful rather than sweet – so much growth happens during that time and if you are there, stay the course! A good God holds you in His hand and promises mercy and to work things out for good in your life!
“Oh satisfy us early with Your mercy, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days!” Psalms 90:14
